New Boston Fire Department EquipmentThe department has two ambulances for medical calls. For fire calls, the department has 9 working trucks. There are 5 engines , 1 tanker , 2 forestry trucks and 1 hose truck that is used on a regular basis. In addition, we have an utility truck and 1 rescue boats, that are used as needed. Two engines, Engine 5 and Engine 6, are housed at the Hilltop station. We also have the second piece of fire apparatus the town ever purchased, a Huneman hand tub . It was one of the finest pieces of fire fighting equipment made in Boston, and we aquired it in 1872 from Salem, MA. Around the year 1900, an organization was form for boys called "Pinball Junior Fire Company". There is a miniature hand pumper called the "Pinball" made just for the kids, and it could throw water 75 feet or more. It was made by Harry Colby, foreman of the engine company and a fireman on the New Boston Railroad and Joe Fitts, a railroad man. There was only one muster where the throw was recorded, and it was 81 feet. The Pinball attends parades and shows, and is kept in either the fire station or the historical society building. It has been on display in the historical society building with it's first place ribbon. |
