The New Boston Artillery CompanyThe New Boston Artillery Company are the caretakers of the Molly Stark cannon. The Company originally existed from 1763 until it was disbanded in the 1800's when individual towns no longer needed to provide military companies. After the artillery company disbanded, the cannon no longer had a caretaker. In the early 1900's many towns were interested in acquiring the Molly Stark. There was even an article in a Manchester paper about a plan to bring the cannon to Manchester by the railroad that came through New Boston. The town realized that if they wanted to keep the cannon, they would have to have a group in charge of it. The New Boston Artillery Company was reformed in 1938 for this purpose. Today, they raise funds to keep Molly in shape, as well as transport it to and from special events in the state. They wear period costumes and participate in the 4th of July parade here in town. They kick off the events at the 4H Fairgrounds with the firing of the Molly Stark at noon. |
